Formed in 1819, the city has a rich and colorful history. The climate is warm with winter low temperatures of around 35 degrees and summer highs in the low 90s. Precipitation averages about 4.5 inches of rain each month. Median family income is about $44,000. Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, with over twelve thousand employees is the area's largest employer. The State of Alabama and Montgomery Public Schools are also important local employers. The minor league baseball Montgomery Biscuits are one of the local sports teams along with the Alabama State University Hornets. Air University, an important educational facility for the US Air Force is located on local Maxwell Air Force Base. Local higher education institutions include Alabama State University, Troy University, Faulkner University, and Huntingdon College. The Montgomery Advisor is the area's newspaper. Local main highways include Interstate I-65 and I-85 as well as US 231 and US 80.
